Coffeehouse Angel Re-Create A Cover Contest

There is another on of these oh-so-lovely recreate a cover contests over on Trisha's Book Blog. You still have a few days to enter, get to it!

This is the original cover:

When Katrina spots a homeless guy sleeping in the alley behind her grandmother’s coffee shop, she decides to leave him a cup of coffee, a bag of chocolate-covered coffee beans, and some pastries to tide him over. Little does she know that this random act of kindness is about to turn her life upside down. Because this adorable vagrant, Malcolm, is really a guardian angel on a break between missions. And he won’t leave until he can reward Katrina’s selflessness by fulfilling her deepest desire. Now if only she could decide what that might be .

Here is the cover Lorena designed:

This was just a quickie before I left for - yeah freaking right, this took so damn long to make, I'm wont be doing another one of these in a long time. Despite the ridiculous amount of work I put into this, I had fun making it. Everything but the spoon, coffee, and table is my own work. That sugar wing was such a pain in the butt to make, but I love how it came out. I hope you guys do too! Oh yeah, also I'm leaving for my first year in college tomorrow :D so, peace!

Her parents are a mess, her friends don't know how to treat her, and her perfect boyfriend suddenly seems anything but.

As Brie settles into her new normal, she encounters more questions than closure: Certain facts about the way Faith died just don't line up. Brie soon uncovers a dark and twisted secret about Faith's final night...a secret that puts her own life in danger.

This is the cover I designed for the contest:

I had originally designed it as a full book jacket, but then I realized it was being published as trade paperback so I cut it down. Hope you like it!

The Dark Divine nail polish! (And a copy of the book too!)

The Dark Divine by Bree Despain
"Grace Divine, daughter of the local pastor, always knew something terrible happened the night Daniel Kalbi disappeared—the night she found her brother Jude collapsed on the porch, covered in his own blood—but she has no idea what a truly monstrous secret that night held.

The memories her family has tried to bury resurface when Daniel returns, three years later, and enrolls in Grace and Jude's high school. Despite promising Jude she'll stay away, Grace cannot deny her attraction to Daniel's shocking artistic abilities, his way of getting her to look at the world from new angles, and the strange, hungry glint in his eyes.

The closer Grace gets to Daniel, the more she jeopardizes her life, as her actions stir resentment in Jude and drive him to embrace the ancient evil Daniel unleashed that horrific night. Grace must discover the truth behind the boy's dark secret...and the cure that can save the ones she loves. But she may have to lay down the ultimate sacrifice to do it—her soul."

Heather Brewer Intro- CONTEST

Celebrate the fourth book in her bestselling series, The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod – Eleventh Grade Burns (Dutton, $16.99) – when Heather Brewer visits us for a party even Vlad himself would enjoy. Forget the Junior Prom. For Vlad, we’ve got the anti-prom, a party dripping in sarcasm and blood red décor. It’s just the thing to help with another sucky year at high school for Vlad, as it looks like things have taken a more serious turn for the teenage vampire who is trying to keep his secret from the world. Joss, a professional vampire slayer and Vlad’s former friend, has moved back to town. A mysterious and very powerful new vampire, Dorian, has arrived on the scene, and he has an overwhelming desire to drink Vlad’s blood. And if things aren’t bad enough, Vlad’s arch enemy, D’Ablo, has brought his uncle Otis to trial for crimes against vampires. So much for Junior Prom! When the tables turn on Vlad, he has just enough time to return to Bathory for his final goodbyes. The stunning cliffhanger ending that will leave readers begging for more. Don’t miss your chance to party with Heather Brewer for this Vampire Valentine’s Day Bash – music and more!

To honor the release of this title, Books & Books will be hosting an author event at their Coral Gables store. Where author Heather Brewer will read, and sign books for admiring fans. But as the final preparations are installed for the weekend's event, we realized we forgot the most important part. We don't have anyone to introduce Heather!

Normally one of us would gladly do it, but we figured, hey why not let the fans give Heather a proper intro, along with a FREE copy of Eleventh Grade Burns to the chosen winner.

Again however, this contest will be limited to those who will be able to attend the event.

So how about we get straight to the rules? To enter, just write up a short intro, which you would use to introduce the author. Please no longer than 4 minutes.

.:Rules:.
  • Write an intro to introduce Heather Brewer. 4 minutes max.
  • E-mail entry to yathenaeum@yahoo.com
  • Include a phone number at which we may contact you if you win.
  • You must be present at the event on February 14th.
  • Contestants are limited to 1 entry
  • Deadline is Friday, February 12th at 7:00 p.m. Eastern
.:Prizes:.
1 entrant will receive:
  • 1: Chance to introduce Heather Brewer at the Valentine's Day Vampire Ball on February 14th.
  • 1: Copy of Eleventh Grade Burns by Heather Brewer
Winners will be chosen on Friday, February 12th at 8:00 p.m. and announced shortly after. (Keep a lookout!)

*Another* Another Faust Contest

Today we bring you a guest contest from Dina and Daniel Nayeri, authors of Another Faust. There's plenty of goodies to be won, so we encourage everyone to enter! So without further ado, here is their post:

Hi everyone. Dina and I are about to kick off a month-long tour for our book, Another Faust, and we want to do it by announcing a contest! We are looking for the most promising writers out there (that’s YOU). And then we want to showcase their work, so that all of the Internet can bask in their awesome writing might (and, you know, give them prizes).

HERE’S HOW IT GOES.

We want you to write your own short story, re-imagining of the Faustian Bargain. (For inspiration, check out Bedazzled, Simpsons “Tree House of Horrors IV,” and The Little Mermaid). It can be about anything you like (but let’s keep it PG-13, and under 3,000 words), and it’s open to everyone.

All you have to do is send your entry to dviergutz@gmail.com before January 31.

Rules and details can be found here.

Make sure to read them so you don’t get DQed

And the winner gets all kinds of sweetness:

  • A signed copy of Another Faust
  • A handwritten deleted scene
  • A featured article & interview on our site
  • An author’s galley of the sequel Another Pan

Though we’ll feature the top five on our site for comments, the judging WON’T happen by popular vote (so basically, we don't care which contestant has the most friends). Dina and I will personally read them.

So, spread the word! Tweet, retweet, forward, thread, spread, embed this post.

Good luck!

John C. Ford Q&A and Contest!

This Contest is Closed
John C. Ford, author of the new book The Morgue and Me, was kind enough to stop by and even give us a copy of his book to give away.

First, the Q&A:
-Who pwns everything?
I think it’s pretty obvious that Kermit the Frog pwns everything. Is this even subject to dispute?

It isn’t easy being green, but Kermit makes it look so cool. The women (or, well, Miss Piggy
anyway) want him, and both the male and indeterminately gendered muppets want to be him. He’s universally respected, funny, and sings a mean version of “The Rainbow Connection.” I rest my case.

-If someone suddenly threw a wad of twenty thousand dollars at you, what would you do?

First and foremost, I would gather up any stray bills that had escaped from the wad and then tuck this newfound fortune in a secret pocket sewn into the lining of my jacket. (Cause that’s how I roll, with the secret linings.) I would then check for bruising, depending on the force of impact with which the projectile wad hit me. Next, I would turn my attention to this strange somebody—who, I assume, is running away from the scene to maintain his/her secret identity—and say “thank you.” I would do this this softly and wistfully, the way one thanks a mystical character (e.g., Bagger Vance, the Horse Whisperer, Obi-Wan Kenobi) in a cinematic feature and/or after-school special in which the mystical character has taught the main character something very special. The main character sure didn’t like it at the time—like when the Karate Kid had to “wax on, wax off” for hours, or like when I got hit in the face with a projectile wad—but then the main character (often seen in a tight close up at this point) understood: that crazy mystical character has given me a gift. That is the sentiment with which I would say “thank you.”

Assuming no immediate medical attention was necessary, I would then perform a complex calculation in my head. It would require me to determine the minimum amount from the $20,000 that I would need to donate to a worthy charity in order to relieve my guilt over blowing the balance on a used car which, unlike my current vehicle, has functioning windshield wipers.

-If 'they' decided to make a movie of your life, which actor would you want to play you?

This is somewhat obscure, but Guy Pearce. He’s just really cool (which may not necessarily be the quality you’re looking for in someone to play me, but whatever—I’m the one casting this thing).

-What's the most random question you can think of? Answer it.

Q: What are your feelings about
the color forest green?

A: It’s weird that you would ask that question, since it’s pretty random and I was just thinking of it. My thoughts are this: (a) aesthetically, I’m pretty much digging it, but I probably like it even more because of it’s association with forests (no surprise) and other greenery in nature; and (b) this is not a color that works for clothing very well, in my opinion; like, it seems like one of those colors that gets picked for bridesmaid dresses that seem good in theory but actually look
horrendous; and (c) it is only just now hitting me that I thought of this question because I still have Kermit the Frog on the mind.

-Can you do the Time Warp again?

Oh, totally. I do it all the time. Right now, for instance, I’m writing you from the year 3047.

-When writing some authors plan every detail and others just dive into the book, so are you an outliner or a diver (or a mix)?

I think it takes an extraordinary level of talent to write a novel-length work that’s worth reading without doing a fair amount of outlining first. Also, I tend to write stories with a lot of “plot” in them, which is hazardous to attempt without a pretty clear roadmap. For the current manuscript I’m writing, I have an outline that identifies every scene that takes place, the location of that scene, the characters involved, and some minimum level of description about what happens. I won’t stick to it completely, but it’s necessary for me to have the general structure of the story in place as I write.

Thanks so much for having me!

Now, do you want a copy of The Morgue and Me? Of course you do. Here's how you can win:
