Midnight Showing of Twilight RECAP/REVIEW

Exactly a week ago, the entire YAthenaeum team went to the midnight showing of Twilight on Thursday night/Friday morning. Here is our recap of the night and our review of the movie. Just as a warning, spoilers will follow and we did not like it. Not just because of the differences in the movie from the book, but also the movie itself alone. So, we’re sorry if you loved it and are annoyed by our opinion, but it is just that and only that, our opinion.

Brought to you by Erika, with comments by Julie in green and Lorena in red. Brigitte in yellow.

It was an early release day, so I got home about 1…(I got home at 3 and got no sleep at all.) Bwahaha I got home at 11, small high schools for the win! not sure what I did for an hour and a half, but at 2:30, I took a nap because I knew I wasn’t going to be getting much sleep that night. At 5:30, I woke up, got ready and at 6:10, Julie, my mom, and I were out the door, with a book bag of homework in tow and Nerdfighter shirts on.

We went to the movie theater and decided to wait in line while we waited for Lorena, Brigitte, and Lorena’s cousin to come so we could pick up our tickets together. They arrived and they got the tickets and my mom left.

The theater then decided they didn’t want everyone waiting outside, so began letting us into a theater. We walked around the entire thing trying to find seats. We considered the far back corner, but since I had to do homework and it was the darkest part, we decided against it. We (I) then found a row on the left side with exactly 6 seats and since it was the first 6-seat row, three of the seats were right above the walkway, so we had somewhere to put out feet. It actually wasn't the most comfortable alternative, but at least we didn't have any heads blocking the way.

Once we put our stuff down, we left to go get some of the overly priced theater food. 16 dollars for a candy combo, honestly! Somehow we managed to carry it all back and also show our tickets on the way. We ate… Lorena filmed me eating, which I wasn’t happy about… Then, I started by history homework. I drew in my sketchbook the seats in front of me and wrote Seeing Twilight at Midnight across it. I decided we would write down all of our comments of the movie in my scketchbook and review them later. I had Pre-Cal homework that no one, including me, understood. The entire 4 and a half hours that followed consisted of me doing homework. We also filmed Fangirl, Fangirl, Boyfriend… We were in a theater hence the darkness. Brigitte started watching Labyrinth on my PSP, but Erika asked me to help her with Spanish, so she ended up stealing it and skipping to all the Bowie scenes. Then we played Diddy Kong Racing on our DS's till we went to get Emily. Which I completely beat her at. Repeatedly. Really, it was almost shameful.

[Fangirl, Fangirl, Boyfriend Video Coming Soon]

At about 8:15, Emily texted that she landed (she had flown up to Boston that morning and back… In all she was going to be awake for 23 hours straight!) and about an hour later, she texted again letting us know she was outside. We all went out to greet her and give her her ticket. She bought food and we did the time warp in the middle of the lobby…FUN STUFF!!! While waiting to get back into the theater, a lady asked us if our shirts spelled anything, so we told her yeah, Don't Forget to be Awesome, but she somehow thought it was connected to our dancing.

I continued doing my homework… Oh, and someone had a laser…That was so annoying!!! It was more amusing than annoying since the employees actually came in and scolded the audience on it. True... That was hilarious!

Some time around 11 Emily decided to go out and stretch, so we went back out for some quick refills and curly fries. Once it was 11:45, I stopped and I’d actually finished mostly all of my homework. The next 15 minutes went by, the lights dimmed, and the previews began.

I complained to both Julie and Lorena when the Harry Potter trailer came on that I should be watching it that night… Sigh... it looked so good compared with the trailers for "Bride Wars" and "Confessions of a Shopaholic".

Once the movie began, there was screaming, (which was shushed by a bunch of people) but as the movie went on it was actually really quiet… I was surprised. Of course there was the occasional screaming when a new character came on the screen, but that was to be expected. I was the only one who screamed when Jacob appeared. The entire time I was laughing hysterically on the outside while crying on the inside because of how bad it all was. (Reasons will follow.) Brigitte and I kept laughing during "dramatic" scenes and people kept telling us to shut up, but we couldn't help it, it was just that bad. Luckily, not for me though, that Lorena kept slapping her hand over my mouth to quiet the worst comments and bits of hysterical laughter.

Once it was over, we left… Complaining as we walked… The best line was when Emily said, “I realized why we wore the nerdfighter shirts. Robert’s puff levels were high.” That was the BEST!!!

Emily took Julie and I home and I went to bed for 3 hours of sleep. (I had 3 and a half)

Reasons we didn’t like the movie (Yes, some are differences from the book, but we couldn't help it... And there are most likely more we are forgetting at this time.):

  • Everything seemed completely awkward.

  • The acting was horrible. It was all generally just bad acting, the characters were too forced. Edward looked like he was constipated throughout the movie and don't get me started on Jasper.
  • The meadow scene was ruined and that was the reason for the book's existence. I actually liked the movie version of the meadow scene, just not the overly violent and slightly crazy/hysterical way Edward showed Bella his vampire-ness

  • Can the Cullens go to a greenhouse? Please inform me how this is possible.

  • Why was there a Tarzan scene? Ah, the Tarzan scene was just so unnecessary. But good for the laughs.
  • Robert sounded like he had a speech problem because he was trying too hard to sound American… A few times the British came out.

  • No “She’s probably hyperventilating in the kitchen right now?”/“Do I dazzle you?” scene at the Port Angeles restaurant. How about the restaurant scene in general?

  • Why did they go to a diner every night? Bella was supposed to cook.

  • Edward’s supposed to look frozen and stiff when he first smells her in Biology, not that he’s about to be sick.

  • They made Jasper (my favorite character) into a joke.

  • I'm pretty sure Kristen Stewert has some sort of blinking problem.

  • Bella's "Great Escape" from Jasper and Alice was ruined. All she did was run out of the hotel while they were checking out. (Don't you think they would have been faster than her?)

  • Tyler doesn't ask her to prom.
  • Their "incredible speed" was just badly done.
  • That was a sad execution of the "sparkling", it honestly just looked like sweat mixed with glitter glue.
  • Rosalie sounded more modern than she was supposed to and honestly she looked like a chonga rather than a drop dead gorgeous woman.
  • Emmett was about as beefed up and muscular as a new born kitten.
  • (And because this can not be said enough) The bad acting! Oh all that is holy, the acting! I honestly hope they weren't giving it their all because it was eye gouging bad.

Breaking Dawn at Midnight- RECAP

We had been planning the Breaking Dawn at Midnight party for months. Discussed countless times the different ideas we’ve had and were for the longest time getting ready this day. We already had all the ideas in place, but just needed to put it all together.

The day began for me with a phone call, way too early for my taste. (Don't worry it wasn't very pleasant for me to be there so early either.) It was Lorena saying she was at the gate to my housing complex. They let her in and I eventually got up.

At around 11:15 am, my mom took us all (Lorena, Brigitte, who came with Lorena, Julie, and me) to Books & Books.

Once there, we looked over all the stuff that Emily had gotten that covered the antiquarian room’s table and set what we brought down. (My poster was also in there but I didn't want anyone to see it so I flipped it but I think Julie and Brigitte kept messing with it)

Soon Emily came, and we ate lunch with her and Debra at Books & Books. During this time we discussed everything that we needed to get done. As well as filled Debra in with spoilers so she could be up to date with the story.

Emily had to go back to the office to print out the signs, so Lorena and Brigitte started on our own Forks road sign, while Julie and I began to hang streamers down in the entryways. Brigitte spent most of the time flipping through New Moon looking for trivia questions while I nearly cut my hand on several occasions trying to cut through foam board.

When Emily came back, we were mostly done with the streamers. Lorena and Brigitte were done with the sign (just needed to put the arrows on the pole), had written some trivia questions down, and made the body glitter (just a mixture of glitter and aloe). As much as I love that old table, I don't think they appreciated what was left when we were done with the glitter. Brigitte tends to go slightly insane with any amount of glitter.

She then left to get the tux, while we moved the tables inside. That was interesting…Basically it was moving those huge rent-able party tables...that had been left out in the courtyard all morning. Not pleasant.

Then, we put the tablecloths on and set them in the center of the room. Emily came back and we began setting up where everything was being put. We taped down the dresses to the table, the numbers that showed which were which, the cake sheet, the numbers for the invitations. We also put the flowers down, but Emily was going to bring vases from her house.

Once it was mostly all there, we decided to decorate the table. I put fake rose petals down and Brigitte got carried away with the glitter. Again.

Then, we pushed the shelves and center book displays in the other room to divide it into three sections. Someone went to go make copies of the quizzes and Emily was going to meet them with the Weddings a la Alice checklist. She also left to go get the futon, vases, and a few other things at her house.

We continued setting up the three different areas sections with what we had. Putting a table in each with a tablecloth covering it. The first was Rosalie’s Vanity, which we put the jar of body glitter on and decorated with random accessory things. Next was Emmett’s Test of Muscle and Might, which basically consisted of the table and chairs. Finally, Jasper’s Mood-o-Meter, which would have a few mood quizzes once we got them copied.

A few friends started arriving to help us out and we put up all the signs. When Emily came back, we cleared the antiquarian room table and brought it out, while also decorating the room with the futon mattress on the ground and chairs scattered around. We finished setting up the Weddings a la Alice and put the stacks of quizzes on Jasper’s table. We also decorated the entire place with multiple red and black balloons. Later on the DJ came and so did the people lending us the beautiful wedding dress to put on display.

Then people started arriving early...like 2 hours before the party early. So we had to start rushing.

Once everything was perfectly in order, we were all going to start getting changed, but we realized we forgot to print the questionnaires out. Luckily I had it saved on my USB and we were able to print enough out.

We then all got dressed and ready. My friend, Sabrina, basically took me under her wing and did my hair and makeup, which I couldn’t see what she actually did to me…

Once we were all ready it was about 8:45, and we were starved. We hadn’t eaten anything since lunch at around 12. But we knew we had to be quick so we split up since there wasn’t a table that could fit us all, asked for what the quickest food would be and ordered it. (Out of the following amazing food names we came up with:

La Bella Italia

The Volturi’s Mozzarella Platter- Mozzarella’s not as innocent as it looks… A fresh mozzarella platter with ripe tomatoes and torn Basil

Emmett’s Leftovers Sandwich- He took the blood, you can have the meat. Roast beef served on a grilled ciabatta roll with blue cheese, red onion and Dijon dressing.

“Tyler’s A Chicken” Caesar Salad

Charlie’s Catch of the Day Sandwich- A tuna fish sandwich, caught by Charlie, cooked by Bella and served on multi grain bread with lettuce and tomato.

Esme’s Motherly Grilled Cheese Sandwich- Or what Esme would cook if her children ate normal food… Served on multi grain bread.

All Beef, No Blood Hot Dog- In no way the ideal food for a vampire, but as a human, it’s perfect. Served on a warm bun with potato chips.

Edward’s Individual Cheese Pizza- Like the bite he took in the cafeteria to prove to Bella he could eat food, only to our taste buds it tastes amazing rather than dirt-like.

Carlisle’s Curecakes- Cupcakes that can cure almost anything…

Angela’s Decadent Brownies- Made with her sweet touch

So, Julie and I both ordered the pizza. Actually we all ordered pizza. I was still a nervous wreck and you could probably ask anyone there and they would back me up on that. So, I ended up running over to Pictures by Esme since I had heard Edward wasn’t there yet and he was supposed to be there at 8. And he wasn’t there, but right when I opened the door to go back around to the café, I bumped into Emily and “Edward”. I told Emily that everything else seemed to be fine and that we should be done eating soon.

Oh, and before I forget, I have to mention that during this entire evening I (along with the others) were in high heels, so when I mention we were running around, it was in these heels.

Went back, and apparently the pizza just came, swallowed the pizza without tasting it, and asked for the check. After we paid, Lorena was almost done, but since it was already past nine everything was already happening, so I decided to run around. I realized I had left my wallet with my mom (whom by the way arrived at some point with my cousins) so I ran to were she was while Brigitte was still eating, to realize that she didn't have it, best guess, it was in the back room. Zoom back and forth ( in heels mind you) and wait for the slowest waiter in the world to bring me my change.

By running around, I literally mean going around the entire store multiple times making sure everything is somewhat going well and taking pictures while I was at it.

Sometime here I believe an employee had arrived with a bunch of decorations to add, including this amazing top hat with HUGE veil attached. Naturally I claimed it for myself and wore it the entire evening.

In brief, here are the different rooms we had:

Rosalie’s Vanity: Complete with a mirror, and jar of body glitter to become a vampire.

Edward’s Den: For parents, boyfriends, anyone who was bored to hang out, with board games, futon mattress, and Marlins’ game playing.

Jasper-o-Meter: With a magic 8 ball and two different mood quizzes we made up.

Emmett’s Test of Muscle and Might: Where a arm wrestling competition took place.

Photos by Esme: You could pose with a look-alike Edward, Jacob, or both.

Wedding’s a la Alice: Where you could vote on the dress design, flower, cake, and invitation you think Bella would have at her wedding.

La Bella Italia: The café (same name as the restaurant in Port Angeles)

Some time after having my picture taken with Edward & Jacob, Emily, Brigitte and I decided to go to the courtyard and try to get a crowd to dance. It didn't really work all too much.... At first... We tried again a few minutes later and ended with a decent crowd. During our dance this pre-teenish girl who had been following me the entire night told me I was needed at the arm wrestling table. So I dragged my dance tired self inside, and then the challenger wasn't even there, so i got a few minutes of relaxation. Won the first match, lost the second. Shame.

So, I went from room to room, and then we had the look-alike contest outside. We didn't have too many contestants, and we had 5 shirts to give out so it was more or less a " You're all winners" moment. I continued going around. The questionnaire winners were tallied (we made these questions pretty hard), and we then had the actual trivia contest from these winners to find Edward’s “true Bella”. More running…

I tallied some of the wedding things for a few minutes… Then, ran around some more.

My friends and I all ended up sitting in the children’s room for a few minutes just to relax. Then, back to the running…

When it was 20 of 12, I found Emily and we went around helping people line up and then Emily got the microphone and made an announcement. I happen to be in the back room during these announcements raiding the ARC cart and they were pretty loud, but when I walked outside I noticed you couldn't hear ANYTHING. So I ran over to Emily to see what was going on, eventually we got that fixed. Every five minutes afterwards, we announced the winner of something that was voted on for Bella’s wedding. Julie, Emily, and I just sat at the former arm-wrestling competition. Five minutes till we announced the winner of the red ipod nano for pre-ordering. Then, we got a box for ourselves, so our friends and I could officially open a box at midnight.

Midnight arrived and I was so exhausted I was honestly not as excited as you’d think. We had some extras so some people snuck out of the line to get from the box. We got opened our box and I collected the ten vouchers. Then, I ran taking pictures of Emily and the other Books & Books employees throwing wedding rice and blowing bubbles as the guests left, as well as of all the guests with their books leaving. I collected my poster from it's stand and waved bye to Emily who was standing on the counter throwing rice. Halfway to the parking lot I realized I had left my phone with Sabrina so I ran back, luckily her mom hadn't left yet so I got it and ran back. Eventually Brigitte and I just caved so we kicked off our shoes and walked the rest of the way barefoot. And knocked out asleep in the car.

Once everyone was basically gone, Julie and I plus the employees were basically the only ones left. We gathered what belonged to us and put it all in one the Breaking Dawn boxes (which I actually still have…) This is when I finally took off my heels and not caring how dirty my feet got walked around barefoot. (The wedding rice seriously hurts barefeet.)

My dad arrived, we left with all our stuff, I began reading in the car, read a few hours when I got home, slept, woke up, and continued reading…same here.

Eclipse Signing - RECAP

To begin our week of past events, on September 15, 2007, Lorena, Julie, and I attended the Stephenie Meyer book signing at the Coral Gables Youth Center sponsored by Books & Books. Miami was the last stop on Stephanie’s tour and there were literally over a thousand people at the event.

I wrote a recap of the event in my journal, and I have transcribed it here. I can’t believe it was over a year ago since I wrote this. It was way before I met Emily (the Books & Books staff member I talk about below), before any of us had dreamed up the idea of a YA blog, and before Breaking Dawn was anything more than a Word Document on Stephenie’s computer.

So, without further ado, I give you a real account of Books & Books’ amazing book signing with one of YA’s most beloved authors:

Leaving the house was an adventure on it’s own because I kept forgetting things… Eventually we left, with phone, camera, glitter, books, and letter in hand.

During the car ride, Julie and I each took a tube of the glitter glue and put it all over our arms and neck. It started peeling, so we had to reapply.

When we finally got to the event, we saw the line protruding out of the building and onto the field of the Coral Gables Youth Center. My sister started complaining and saying how she didn’t want to go because from what we saw not many people were dressed up.

While we were wearing pretty nice dresses… with a ton of glitter.

Somehow, I got my stubborn sister out of the car and in line. We waited and waited. Some people were probably looking at us strangely because of the glitter.

Then, the line started moving and with every step my heel dug into the dirt.

Eventually, we got into the air-conditioning! Then, the line split in two, one for those who had to buy Eclipse and get a ticket, and those who already had one.

We went down the “already have a ticket” line. At the door a Books & Books employee took our ticket and said, “Nice!” Referring to what we were wearing and the glitter.

We said “Thanks,” and walked to our spot in line. There were already quite a few people there.

We added more glitter glue, including to our faces, since Lorena who was supposed to bring some glitter wasn’t there yet and we figured she might not be there soon.

A Books & Books employee was coming around and wrote my name on a post-it note, and stuck it on the inside cover of Eclipse.

At 4:00, the Q and A started. Stephenie Meyer walked in with a huge cheer and began first by going through questions she had heard multiple times (since this was the last stop) and then asked for questions from the audience.

After 20 minutes of questioning, Stephenie started signing. We were allowed to get as many books as we wanted signed, but only Eclipse personalized. From where we were in line at the time, we could see Stephenie and others getting their books signed, one girl looked like she had at least 7… I’m not sure how she even carried them all. While we were watching this, I realized I completely forgot Prom Nights From Hell existed, which was sitting on my bookshelf; even so, I still had two Twilights (one paperback and one hardcover), a New Moon, and an Eclipse… I began feeling bad for Stephenie thinking of all the books she’d be signing.

We waited and waited. While we were waiting these girls came up to us and one said, “We couldn’t help notice how much you were sparkling. We’re from our school newspaper and wanted to know how far you traveled to come today.” We said “Doral. Not far.” (It’s only about 20 minutes away… it’s just another part of Miami.) She said, “Oh. She,” while pointing to another girl she was with, “had the same idea about the sparkles, but we didn’t have enough.” Then, they left. I saw them put body glitter on after they talked to us, which I thought was pretty rude, but honestly, nothing could compare to the amount of glitter we had with our glitter glue… though it was peeling, but surprising didn’t hurt.

We could tell there were people looking at us, the entire time we were there. They were probably just jealous they didn’t think of glitter.

Lorena joined us while we waited. (Yeah..what’s that? Skipping? Nah they were just… holding my place in line.)We started talking about the glitter and she put some of the glitter glue on too. (My Martha Stewart glitter didn't stand a chance against Elmer’s Glitter Glue.)

The line was moving and we were slowly getting closer to meeting Stephenie Meyer!

At one point, since the line went up and down, someone on the other said either, “Cool glitter” or “Nice glitter,” honestly I didn’t hear it, but Julie did and replied “Thanks.”

-Insert long waiting scene-

Then, this other girl came up to us and said, “Is the glitter supposed to be like the way Edward shines in the sun?”

We said in unison, “Yeah.”

And she said, “Oh, okay, I was just wondering.”

Then, she left. But as we watched her leave, she had climbed over this bleacher thing to the other side of the line. We had to laugh and at the thought of how badly she really wanted our answer to climb over a bleacher in order to ask…

We talked about how the glitter was peeling. I said that we were vampires who had a sunburn. I thought it was pretty funny and truthful because if vampires could get sunburns, their glittery skin would be peeling.

-Insert waiting scene not quite as long as the last one-

We were down to the final stretch of the line. I was so excited; we all were!

Then, we finally got to the front where a Books & Books employee was writing post-its for those who they had missed before and to tell people to move to the short line in front of the table.

We walked up to the table. First, someone made sure the book jacket was on the title page and handed the books back to us. We waited for a few more people and finally we were almost in front of Stephenie Meyer!

A lady next to her opened the book for Stephenie and she said hi to us. I reached out to give Stephenie a letter I had written to her; the same lady next to her took it and thanked me. She put it in a small stack of other things people had given to Stephenie.

Stephenie saw the glitter we had on our arms and face and said, “Some glittering vampires.”

My sister and I said, “Yeah”

She said, “Isn’t that uncomfortable?”

“Not really,” we said.

She said, “Does it look cool in the sun?”

“Yeah,” I said very enthusiastically while Julie said the same thing without enthusiasm.

Stephenie said, “I can’t believe you actually put on Elmer’s glue and glitter.”

We just smiled, chuckled, and shrugged.

Then, we turned around after picking up our signed books. My mom took a picture with Stephenie in the background and we left.

I wish I wasn’t as shy as I am and actually talked more to Stephenie, but I am, so I didn’t.
